Most of us spend a considerable amount of time prioritising our cleansing routines for our physical bodies and other material items, but we forget the essential parts of who we are. Our mind, emotions, and spirit.
Living in such an overwhelming environment filled with pollution, toxic information, negative energy, and low vibrations and frequencies make it very important to protect our energetic bodies and keep them cleansed and filled with light.
In this article, I will talk about what is energy cleansing, why it is so essential to incorporate as many spiritual hygiene techniques into our daily routines as possible, and how to cleanse your energy in the most efficient ways.
With the current state of the world, especially with the past 2 years of our collective consciousness expansion, we are forced to experience negative feelings, such as fear, anger, resentment, blame, and guilt, daily. These negative emotions vibrate extremely low on the energetic scale, so they do absolutely nothing to support our levels of well-being on a physical, mental, or emotional plane.
This is why if we don’t bring more calm and positive energy to our minds and bodies to soothe and recalibrate, everything around us will start to unravel in the same negative, low-frequency based way, and here is where cleansing your energy comes in hand.
To define spiritual hygiene, considering that it is a broad concept with many perspectives, we could put it this way – “spiritual” refers to the idea of a connection to something greater than ourselves, which most likely involves a search for a deeper meaning in life, and ‘spiritual hygiene’ refers to the creation and reinforcement of positive and high-frequency habits that promote well-being and a state of oneness.
When we talk about maintaining good physical hygiene, we refer to having regular habits that promote good physical health, such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy, exercising regularly, keeping clean, etc. Maintaining good emotional hygiene operates in the same way – filling our hearts with compassion and forgiveness, focusing on unconditional love, trusting the greater plan and intuition, etc.
These are very beautiful habits that we can choose to create and reinforce to nurture and maintain our emotional health and physical well-being…but what about our spirit?
When discussing how to cleanse spiritual energy, there is a straightforward answer: spirituality is individual, and one-size-fits-all does not apply. Everyone has their own experience of what it means to cultivate and nurture a spiritual life and practices.
However, most common examples include: having a regular meditation practice, practising mindfulness, creative visualisation, drumming circles, reading inspirational books, spending a lot of time in nature, cultivating stillness, being of service to the greater good, prayer, and so on. Some of the most popular spiritual hygiene practices that start with balancing the physical energy include Qi Gong, Tai Qi, and Yoga, as they fall into all three categories: body, mind, and spirit hygiene.
Ultimately, spiritual hygiene is a simple practice of paying careful attention to maintaining your energetic self, which includes your aura and the rest of your celestial bodies. This spiritual ritual is practised by many people, including those from backgrounds such as Buddhism, Christianity, and Wicca. Each person may use different spiritual practices, but they all strive to achieve one goal: to clear their mind, body, and spirit, as well as their energetic space of any unwanted, stagnant, or negative energy.
Cultivating and nurturing good spiritual hygiene has many benefits, including alleviating chronic stress, back pain, headaches, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and more.
When you cleanse your energy field by practising various spiritual hygiene techniques regularly, you ultimately improve your emotional state, strengthen the immune system, reduce the risk of physical dis-ease, improve self-confidence and fitness levels, as well as open your heart to the Universal force, Energy, or Source of all that is.
And by doing so, you find yourself having a stronger advantage to overcome the low-frequency vibrations, thought patterns and emotions that we are currently all consumed by, on so many levels, globally.
As a rule of thumb, good personal practice is to pay careful attention to and tend to your energy. Just as you take care of and cleanse your physical body with personal hygiene practices, the same can be done on a spiritual level.
Many psychics can “see” different planes of existence and can therefore identify the energy residue and attachments from others you have been in contact with or past experiences that can stick to your aura, just like dirt and grime can stick to your body. This spiritual practice is called “7 Chakras Energy Assessment”, and it is part of my Angelic Reiki Healing service add-ons and many other energy healing techniques. In case you missed it, check this article to find out all you need to know about What is Angelic Reiki Healing.
However, there are some easy to spot signs when one needs an aura energy cleansing and beyond, such as:
Your energy is a part of your body, and you can master it in very simple ways. Even if the energy stuck to you doesn’t belong, you can cleanse yourself spiritually and remove any unwanted energetic waste. So now, let’s dive deep into my favourite top spiritual hygiene techniques to nurture your mind, body, and soul that you can do from the comfort of your own home and safe space.
Over the years, whilst practising various energy healing techniques, including Tarot & Oracle Reading, Angelic Reiki Healing, and Sound Healing Therapy, I came to a very clear conclusion – the only way we can maintain our physical, mental and emotional well-being strong during such traumatically challenging times, is to reinforce our spiritual practices, preferably daily.
We must make taking care of our heart and spirit a priority in our routine to stay connected to our inner being, our higher self, so we can ultimately align with what we want out of this life and what we are here for.
Oh, ask me my favourite topic when it comes to spiritual hygiene, and there will be one answer only – how to use sage to cleanse negative energy! Burning white sage is one of the most ancient and effective ways to eliminate unwanted energy from your aura, body, and space.
The practice of burning sage dates back to prehistoric times, and it’s been documented as having been used in every corner of the world by our ancestors. However, knowing which type of sage to buy when cleaning unwanted energy is key!
You’ll want to buy “White Sage Smudge Stick”, often called “California White Sage”. When buying sage online, I would advise avoiding mass-market retailers like Amazon, as more than often, the sage that gets sold there isn’t of high-quality or ethically cultivated. A good website that I would highly recommend is The Psychic Tree, and not only for their beautiful white sage with cedar & sweetgrass smudge stick. Additionally, you could always look around the town you live in as you never know when you’ll come across a crystal shop or multidimensional well-being market that sells them.
Once you’ve purchased your sage smudging stick, make sure that before you light it up, you’ll always open a door or window as the unwanted energy you are trying to clear must have a pathway to get out. Once you’ve done that, get ready to grab the sage as far from the end you are burning as possible and hold it at a 45-degree angle whilst letting it burn for about 20 seconds and then gently blow out the flame so that you see orange embers on one end.
And from there onwards, it’s all about how you feel called to direct the sage bundle and its smoke. You can circle your body with the burning stick whilst saying out loud or in your mind affirmations such as “I cleanse my mind, body, and soul of all negative and unwanted energy, of all blocked or stagnant energy that does not belong to me or that no longer serves me now”, or anything that resonates at the time.
You can start cleansing your body, aura, space, room, or even the whole house you are, your belongings, and everything else that feels heavy or that might benefit from smudging.
Extra tip: If you are not a fan of using an actual sage smudge stick, you can try with white sage incense, they will do the job just fine!
Another one of my favourite ways in which you can cleanse any negative energy is by burning palo santo wood sticks. Oh, the sweet aroma, the gentle and thin smoke, and the uplifting energy are Divine!
Palo Santo is one of the most fragrant woods in the world, portraying a sweet scent of pine, mint, and lemon, which has been a beloved way of bringing healing and good fortune to one’s life for centuries. Shamans, saints, and those seeking a stronger spiritual connection with the Source use palo santo to protect, experience and heal. It is no wonder most healers today are using palo santo in their practices or daily cleansers for their mind, body, and soul.
When the wood gets burned, it’s believed to have powerful properties in clearing negative energy and restoring tranquillity and calm. It also inspires creativity whilst promoting love and connectedness with all that is. Put it this way – If meditation is the yin, palo santo is the yang!
The uplifting scent of this sweet wood is the perfect partner for your meditation practice if you are seeking to raise your vibration, discover peace and groundedness, and sink into a deeper connection with the Earth and your inner consciousness.
Other great herbs for cleansing negative energy are cedar (for decluttering), yerba santa (self-love and self-care), rosemary (new beginnings), mugwort (dreamy nights), juniper (comfort), resins like frankincense and myrrh (purification), Tibetan monastery incense (clarity), sandalwood (grounding).
Another key spiritual hygiene technique is using music to cleanse negative energy, but not any kind of music!
We’re talking about Tibetan bowls, gongs, shamanic drums, tuning forks, shakers, ocean drums, rainsticks, and many other sound healing instruments. Many powerful methods of sound cleansing date back thousands of years across cultures, such as Tibetan bells and singing bowls, however, while these sounds are powerful, you don’t need to splurge on expensive instruments to cleanse your energy and home.
I wrote a whole article on What is Sound Healing Therapy, so make sure to check it out to find out how you can transmute and cleanse energy with the power of sound!
Using crystals to remove and cleanse unwanted energy is a practice that has been around for ages, and it is still a favourite amongst spiritual communities.
Certain stones for cleansing negative energy have or emit their energy, but they also absorb the energy around them, so they must be cleansed regularly. Using crystals is very easy – choose your crystal and place it in a space near you. You could place a few crystals around your home, at the door to your office, on your work desk, or even wear them as jewellery pieces (my favourite way).
One of the most popular energy cleansing crystals are:
Ahhh, salt baths, what a delight. Salts are minerals that have been used to absorb and remove negative energy for centuries.
You can place salt around a home to protect against psychic attacks, however, an energy cleansing bath with salt is one of the most efficient and relaxing ways to remove negative energy from your mind, body, and spirit.
So whenever you feel heavy, stressed, or you simply want to create an oasis of bliss, prepare yourself a warm bath and add Epsom salts and even a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil to provide even more protection and enjoyment as you bathe in the luxurious scent and silky feel of the Epsom salt and oil mixture.
One of the most popular essential oils for cleansing energy are:
Additionally, you can even purchase a Pink Himalayan Salt Lamp or a candle holder made of salt to create feelings of peace and prosperity. They are ideal for offices and homes where burning herbs or incense is not the best option, and they look gorgeous as they glow.
Remember that anything you do to clear unwanted energy, even the simple act of opening a window, will bring more flow and positive energy into your home and your life, too!
Meditation is one of the most popular and widely used spiritual practices to engage in contemplation and reflection and connect with your higher self.
Some use it for stress and relaxation, others to clear their minds, and some to awaken and deepen their connection to something greater than themselves. Some of the most researched and proven benefits of practising an energy cleansing meditation regularly are:
Ultimately, meditation encourages you to do everything with intention, as when you’re meditating, you can learn how to better listen to what your body needs. And when you choose to listen to your body, you’re naturally going to learn how to live a more mindful life.
But the long-term benefits of practising meditation come from dedication to daily practice and the willingness to grow. If you want to experience a short but heart-opening meditation practice, I recorded a Higher Heart Chakra Audio Guided Meditation to help you open your heart like a beautiful rose opening in the morning sunlight.
Visualisation, also known as guided imagery or creative visualisation, is the technique of focusing your imagination on behaviours or events you’d like to have occur in your life. Imagine a practice where you can create a detailed schema of what you desire and then visualise it repeatedly, using all of your senses.
This spiritual practice is based on the idea that your body and mind are connected, and through creative imagery, visualisation can change emotions that subsequently have a physical effect on the mind, body, and soul. This can be done on your own or in a group with more people, however, I find it easier to do it when someone else is guiding you through visualisation, preferably someone certified in this kind of practice.
Some of the basic steps in practising visualisation are:
Another beautiful way to balance and cleanse your energy is by chanting sacred mantras, such as OM.
There is proof that chanting affects physical matter as it can create patterns in the sand. You can feel the effects of chanting as the soundwaves reverberate throughout your body, but the waves don’t stop there. They begin from deep within and travel to permeate the space around you, clearing and healing your energy and spirit.
To learn this powerful spiritual hygiene practice, follow these steps:
Solitude is a very delicate and powerful spiritual practice, and it is very efficient when anything is going on in your life, be it a positive or negative experience.
In solitude, you can allow yourself the time to be by yourself, to only focus on your energy and no one else’s. When you choose to stay alone for a while, you can think clearer, make decisions, and have the space to be who you want with no one else around judging or influencing you. IT IS JUST YOU AND YOUR HIGHER SELF.
However, an important thing to know is that being alone and feeling lonely are two completely different things! Many people feel lonely even when they’re in a crowded room. And some people spend lots of time alone without ever actually feeling lonely.
Creating more solitude in your daily life can reduce your feelings of loneliness. Solitary skills take practice if you’re not used to being alone, but you can grow more comfortable being by yourself over time. To make your solitude practice more enjoyable, try to find those things that make you feel safe, creative, inflow, and in sync with who you truly are. That might be yoga, drawing, painting, dancing, singing, or reading a good book while drinking herbal tea next to a healing crystal candle. Whatever makes you feel you, do it!
Let’s acknowledge that it’s time to be honest with your true self and ask yourself this question – “When is the last time I engaged in any activity for pure enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose?”
You’d be surprised that most of you will take a long moment to think and still won’t be able to come up with something. This is because people treat life way too seriously, and they forget about their inner child, inner joy, and need to engage in playful activities. Everyone is running on the “flight or fight” nervous system instead of on oxytocin, the “love hormone”. And guess what…there is no way we can manifest or live a long, joyful life if we are always in that state.
Think back to when you were just a child…what were the things you LOVED to do? Was it riding your bike, walking in nature, painting, drawing, seeing friends, watching funny movies? Try to remember all those little things that used to shift you out of stress and immerse you into divine soul pleasure, also called HAPPINESS.
Adding play to your daily life can truly add value and energy to your spiritual hygiene, so stop taking life so seriously! And instead, give your soul the chance to feel free.
I’ve always loved to write and express my thoughts and feelings by putting the pencil on the paper and letting my imaginative brain come out to play. There was something about the feel of holding a pencil instead of a pen, the sharpness of it, the femininity and the infinite potential of creation, and it was all in my little fingers since a very young age.
Whenever I would sit down in a quiet space, just me, my pencil, and my journal (and usually a funny-shaped eraser in case I’d like to delete any of my thoughts and emotions from the paper – how easy life would be if we could do that in real life as well, right?), everything would be….perfect.
Journaling is a powerful practice if you seek personal and spiritual development and growth. Did you know that the most influential people carry journals around because when they have an idea or something synchronistic happens because it is important to write it down? Yep, that’s a fact!
Nowadays, everyone knows that taking care of your physical health is critical to staying on top of your game, but we still struggle to do the basic things we need to maintain energy and thrive at work and home.
However, physical activity has always been one of the best ways to help our brain settle into stillness and reconnect with the heart to align our life with what matters most. One of the most popular ways to encourage your body, mind, and spirit to be fully engaged at the moment and to shift your focus into gratitude, appreciation, and positive reflection is by practising Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, and many others.
Some of the main benefits that physical activity has upon our being are:
After all, movement is the key to life, and if everything is vibrating, moving, and changing constantly…nothing can stay still. The Earth is always rotating, your heart pumps blood all the time, and even when we meditate and still our mind, our spirit is travelling to other realism and dimensions.
So make sure that you create and sustain a constant movement routine for yourself as it has the power to shift your mood, it gets you out of your head and emotions, and it allows your organs and blood to flow more naturally.
What do I mean about movement routine? Anything from working out, strength or HIIT training, dancing, riding your bike, taking a walk, anything that brings you joy.
As human beings, we’re living things that are not separate from nature but are in harmony with nature. As a city girl myself, I can easily notice how I yearn for nature more and more as I keep up with my busy city life.
So whenever I find myself stuck between negative thoughts or emotions, I always try to go into nature, even if that means I will take 15 minutes to walk in the closest park to my home. When I am in nature, I feel like I am at home, like my soul gets refreshed by just breathing in the fresh air, listening to the multitude of birds chirping, the sound of fallen leaves under my feet, and the vastness of the sky as I look above my head.
Why is spending time in nature a must to keep your heart, mind, and body happy? Here’s why:
But the biggest benefit…it helps you drop down from your monkey mind into your free-spirited heart, even if it’s just for a moment!
Tip: In case you are a busy city girl like me, bringing nature indoors is another excellent thing you can do as part of your spiritual hygiene and to bring more positivity into your mind and heart. There are many energy cleansing plants that you could choose from, such as:
And for those seeking kid and pet-friendly houseplants:
You can browse them all at Beards & Daisies, my all-time favourite place to purchase lovely indoor plants filled with positive energy and good vibes.
EVERYTHING on this Earth has a specific energetic vibration. You and I have one, the rocks outside, the trees, the animals, the buildings, everything.
Now think about the food you put into your physical body. Is it always a take out or a restaurant meal? Do you buy frozen meals and cook them often? Do you eat a lot of processed foods? Do you ever eat vegetables or fruits? What about the amount of sugar and caffeine you consume daily?
When you buy vegetables from the produce section, but not the bagged ones, they come straight from Mother Earth. They don’t have to get processed or head to a factory to get bagged, which means their vibration is relatively high – an amazing thing to do as part of your spiritual hygiene techniques.
Ayurveda is based on the principle that if you eat good food straight from the ground, you will feel good, helping you put your awareness back into your diet, so you can make more conscious decisions about the type of vibrational food you consume.
Essentially, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
